Scott's Weekly Greeting ...

Have you ever had a deja vu experience? There is always that strange feeling that you recognize a particular moment as having already happened. I have had that experience several times in my life. Sometimes it was just a fleeting glimpse, or the feeling that I had been somewhere before, but other times I can recall a conversation. It is very strange when you know precisely what the other person is going to say ... word for word!

I have mentioned in the past that I have vivid and memorable dreams. There have been a couple of times when those vivid dreams were part of one of those deja vu moments. The most memorable one was a case in which I had a dream about the Megabucks lottery number. I remembered the first four numbers clearly, the remaining two were fuzzy. The next day at work, I told my co-workers about the dream. I asked them if I should buy a ticket and play the numbers. In the end, I did not buy the ticket. I thought that it was a silly notion. After all, it was only a dream.

However ... that night I watched the Megabucks drawing ... and the first four numbers picked were the four numbers from my dream! The last two numbers were not the fuzzy numbers that I recalled. Even so, if I had bought a ticket I would have won forty dollars!!

Thankfully, not every dream comes true. But I have learned that dreams can be very powerful. Dreams can inspire. Dreams can give us hope. Dreams can unlock our creative energies. I have dreams about the church and church ministries all the time! I have not had another dream about a lottery number. I guess that I missed my chance. I do spend time thinking about my dreams pondering what my subconscious may be telling me, and also considering that it may be God nudging me. (FYI ... I did have dreams about First Parish before I made the decision to accept the call!)

During this time of pandemic ... this time of searching ... this time of charting new courses and exploring new opportunities, dreaming is important. How is God nudging us? What is God calling us to be? How are we going to manifest the ministries of Jesus Christ? How can we engage our community in meaningful ways?

The world is constantly changing. We can either dream a dream of days gone by ... or we can dream about a bright new future together. What will it be? Let us dream together.
