Scott's Weekly Greeting, June 29, 2021 ...

I try to plan the worship services several weeks in advance so that Jacqui can plan the music and prepare the choirs. As I was planning for this Sunday's service a song can to mind ...

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
And to run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
And to love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are to weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest ...

Go ahead and sing! You know that you want to!

Sometimes when I consider our call as Christians, it seems to me that we have been given an impossible dream. God's dream for the world is that humanity cares for one another, sacrifices for one another, and manages to live together in peace and harmony. However, pursuing that dream, responding to God's call upon our lives can seem as though we are tilting at windmills.

But is it?

God would not burden us with an impossible dream. God would not saddle us with a call that is impossible to achieve. That would be cruel and utterly lacking in compassion. God would not sends us upon a fool's errand. God is not sitting up the heavenly throne with Jesus on the right and the Holy Spirit on the left sipping a drink and laughing at us as we try in earnest only to fail. That is not God's way. And please forgive the anthropomorphism. God is active in the universe, but I not think that sitting and sipping are included among the activities.

Certainly, God wants us to succeed. God wants the dream to be realized. It will not be easy. It will require our passionate commitment. It will require our sweat and probably our tears. It means that we listen for God's direction so that we are following God's dream rather than our own personal desires. It will require every gift that God has bestowed upon us combined with the gifts that our neighbors possess. This is a community effort. And God will be with us every step of the way!

Mount up! The dream awaits!
