Membership Inquiry

INVITING “FRIENDS” TO CONSIDER MEMBERSHIP

We at First Parish are very fortunate to have a significant number of people who, while not members, are active participants in the life and ministry of our church.   We value their presence, their involvement, and their faith.  One of the aspects of our church’s style is to have an open door for people to be welcomed as they are.   That welcome extends to the worship, education, and program life of the church whether one is a member or not.  Certainly, the choice to be a “friend” rather than a member has been and presently is respected, whatever an individual’s personal reasons may be.

While honoring that personal space, it is also important to extend the sincere invitation to church membership.  A church is a community, and membership represents being fully a part of that community.   It is an affirmation to be in covenant/in relationship, to benefit the community and to benefit oneself.  The relationship with God and other people is named.  In membership one makes an intentional, personal “statement” about one’s identity and values.  At this time in our history, such a “statement” could be a significant step in claiming who I am and how I intend to be in the world.  Membership also extends a voice and vote in the decisions of First Parish’s work and future.
