Scott's Weekly Greeting, July 27, 2021 ...

I helped a squirrel today. Or ... at least I hope that I did. When I went home for lunch, I saw the little squirrel in the road next to the curb. I thought that it was funny that he did not run away. Naturally, I thought about it all during lunch. So, before I went back to the church, I went to check on it. As I walked up the street, I was relieved to see that it was not in the street anymore. But then I kept on walking. As I got closer, I realized that it was around the corner very close to Old Orchard Avenue. I thought that the poor thing might be dead ... but then I saw it move. It looked at me, but did not run away. Very odd. I put on my gloves and picked it up. It did not struggle at all. I did a quick examination and could not see anything that was obviously wrong with it. I moved it to a cool, shady spot away from the street. Of course, you know that I will check on it when I go home.

I hope that it is just a young squirrel that lost its way. I hope that it is okay. I hope that I helped. And if there was something wrong with it ... at least it did not die in the street. Perhaps one day, the local squirrel community will build an acorn statue of me! "That is the nice man that helped our friend!"

I do not share this as supporting evidence for the acorn statue. I offer it as evidence of the importance of being aware of what is happening around us. I might have driven by that little squirrel without seeing it in the street. We can just as easily move through life so preoccupied with our 'to do' lists in front of our faces and not realize someone, or something, in need of care or attention. May this be a lesson to us all. Look around. See the world around you. Take notice of the beauty of creation. Take notice of something that requires attention. Take time to offer assistance.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread." This week in worship, our message, "Being Bread," will be based upon John 6:24-35. Our summer pick-up choir will be singing. All are welcome with the need to pre-register. Please note that masks are required.
