Consider this prayer by Charles de Foucauld:
"I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you;
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me
and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,
for I love you, Lord,
and so need to give myself into your hands,
without reserve and with boundless confidence.
For you are my God. Amen."

After our worship service on Sunday, we held a virtual time of reflection for people to ponder the message and also to share their stories. One individual asked the question, "How does one know when the urging that one feels is the Voice of God, or their own personal desires?"

It is an excellent question. It can be very difficult to distinguish. The ego can be a very powerful god in our lives. Does God use our "inner voice" to guide and instruct us? Or, does our inner voice masquerade as God? There will be times when we will listen to that voice only to find out that it was not the Voice of God at all. Sometimes only time and the consequences of our choices will reveal the true source of the voice.

As you continue your Lenten walk, take time to listen for the Voice of God. Listen to what the Voice may be saying, or to what it might be calling you to do. A couple of questions may help you along the way:

Is it the Way of Love?
Is it the Way of compassion?
Will it benefit others more than it will benefit me?

If so, that could very well be the Voice of God.
