Scott's Weekly Greeting, April 27, 2021 ...

Years ago, I read a sermon titled, "God, the Music Lover." The author of the sermon spoke of the rhythms of the universe and the songs of Creation as the evidence for God's love of music. The sermon then pointed out that God placed that rhythm and song into the human soul. Created in God's image, we share the passion for music.

Some may not hear the music in that way, but others do. Music rises forth from us when we experience joy ... a song bursts out of our mouths as we sing in delight. Music helps calm us when we are frightened and soothes us when our hearts are broken. Music is included in most of the celebrations that mark the milestones of our lives. Music has the ability to evoke strong and powerful emotions. I know that I am often brought to tears when I hear certain songs or pieces of music. Some of those songs, even those that I have heard dozens and dozens of times, do not lost their power to summon my emotions.

God the Music Lover must have been singing a song when we were created. The rhythms in our hearts respond in kind.

This week, May2, we celebrate Music Sunday. COVID-19 has made all of our worlds more difficult. This has been especially true for choral music. Singing is still considered to be a risky behavior. The choirs at First Parish Church rose to the challenge. They rehearsed virtually, practicing on their own, then recorded individual tracks that were woven together by our Music Director, Jacqui Savage. Our choirs would not be silenced. They sang, and in the process, they lifted all of our spirits. On Sunday, we will celebrate this incredible effort and their wonderful results!
