“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Charles Dickens penned those words to open his classic book, A Tale of Two Cities, but he might as well have written them to describe that week that we now call Holy Week.

On Palm Sunday, Jesus rode humbly but also triumphantly into Jerusalem to the shouts of "Hosanna!" He rode into a city that was dominated by military might fueled by taxation. He rode into a city that was the center of their faith, but a faith that had been corrupted by power and avarice. He rode into a city with the charged emotions of celebration and fear.

It was the best of times and the worst of times. The people cheered the arrival of their true king, their savior, while the Romans and the Temple authorities plotted his destruction. No doubt the disciples got caught up in the excitement of the crowd ... but there were also those words that Jesus had said about his suffering and death.

They were the worst of times ... the disciples betrayed him, failed to remain awake with him, denied him. He was arrested, beaten, mocked, crucified ... and died. They laid his broken and beaten body in a tomb and sealed the opening.

They were the best of times! Three days later they went to the tomb to prepare the body and the stone had been rolled away! He was gone! An angel appeared and told them that he had risen!! Risen ... just like he said he would!! Risen!!

This week we remember those events. On Palm Sunday, we celebrated the entry into Jerusalem.

Maundy Thursday, April 1, 7:30 PM ... we gather with Jesus and the disciples and share the Last Supper with them. We then descend into the darkness and shadows in our Tenebrae service.

Good Friday, April 2 ... our sanctuary will be open from noon - 3:00 PM for those who wish to come and spent time in prayer or silent reflection.

Easter Sunday, April 4, 10:00 AM ... the celebration of resurrection!! We hear the wonderful story once again. The Good News ... Jesus is risen!! The service will feature the glorious music of Easter!

May God bless you and give you peace,

Scott
