Scott's Weekly Greeting, June 2, 2020

To be honest ... I am at a loss for words. I communicate for a living, but I cannot adequately express the feelings that I have in mere words. I can write the word "scream," but it lacks the volume and raw emotion of an actual scream. I can write the word "heartbroken," but it does not communicate the feeling squeezing my chest. None of the words ... sad, angry, disappointed, anxious, fearful ... can even come close to elucidating the complex maelstrom of emotions filling my heart and my mind.

There are no words to capture the depth and breadth of what is happening in our world right now. So, how do we move forward when we cannot even describe how we feel?

We take one step.

We take one step ... we stop talking and we listen. We open ourselves up to hearing the stories of our neighbors.

We take one step ... we stop shaming and blaming, we stop believing that we get to decide how others should express their pain and fear.

We take one step ... we ask, "What can I do to help?"

We take one step ... we consider what it means to be made in the likeness of God.

We are created in God's image. We share God's DNA. So then, what does that mean in times like these? What does it demand of us?

How do we embody love?

How do we create peace?

How do we offer grace?

How do we extend hospitality? Compassion? Kindness? Generosity? Patience?

Does embracing our divine DNA make us re-order our priorities?

Watching the evening news overwhelms us. The constant deluge of information on our desktops and social media heaps up around us and the darkness closes in. The problems plaguing our communities are deep-seated and complicated. There are no easy answers. What can one person do?!

Take one step ... be a source of light.

One act of love offers hope. One act of kindness inspires others. One act of grace opens the door to deeper relationship.
Take one step.
