Scott's Weekly Greeting, March 16, 2021 ...

Confucius once said, "Choose a job that you love, and you will never work a day in your life."

His words are true. Over the years, I have spoken with numerous people that hate their jobs. Every day is a grind for them. Each day steals some of their life from them. And then I have been acquainted with people that love their jobs. Every day, although not always easy, is a pleasure and a joy for them. Of course, my guess is that most of them would not consider what they do for employment to be a job. They likely consider it to be a calling, or more appropriately ... a response to a calling. What they do is an extension of who they are.

This past Sunday, we were privileged to welcome Reverend Merle Steva to our pulpit for our special Lenten sermon series. Merle offered a very moving and thought-provoking message. At one point he made a statement that put things in perspective for me. He said that he was ordained in 1960. He has been serving churches longer than I have been alive! What faithfulness and commitment. I wonder if it ever felt like work to him.

In today's world, we do not often hear about people serving in any capacity for over sixty years. Unless ... it is a true calling, a passion, an extension of who they are. I am approaching the twenty-fifth anniversary of my ordination. I have a way to go to match Merle. Who knows ... I may make it. A fortune teller once told me that I would live to be ninety-nine! So, there is a chance. And the reality is that I love what I do.

Most of you reading this are not pursuing a career in the ministry. However, that does not mean that you have not responded to your individual callings. God places a desire in our hearts, and then God speaks to that desire. God calls it forth. We are born with the glowing ember of God's Spirit within us. We are made in the likeness of God. As God so loves the world, so too are we to love. As God serves the world, so are we to serve.

As the beloved children of God, let us listen for the song that God sings to our hearts. Then let us respond to that song with love.
