Scott's Weekly Greeting ...

This week I have had occasion to consider some of the people that have played a role in making me the person that I am today.
When I was in elementary school, we had two "lunch ladies" ... Mrs. Black and Mrs. White. In a twist on the cowboy hat stereotype, Mrs. White was very mean and Mrs. Black was the nice one. I learned the importance of being kind from Mrs. Black.

In high school, I encountered Mary Charest, my French teacher, and Arthur Gage, my Physics teacher. Both of them were very creative in the creation of their lesson plans, and taught me learning can be fun!

I had a different learning experience in college. Professor Adeleke Atewologun taught me the importance of high expectations and the value of hard work.

I had a number of role models in my ministry. I met Rev. Bob Baggs at summer camp. Interestingly, he was my mother's minister when she was a youth. Bob Baggs taught us the Johnny Appleseed song, and he taught us all what it means to have a gentle spirit. He may be the sweetest and most gentle person that I ever met, and I will always remember his smile and the twinkle in his eyes. Rev. Dr. George "Nick" Carter was one of the people that showed me that ministers can be fun, as well as the creative use of illustrations in worship. I remember the sermon that he did from the staging that was erected in the chancel of the sanctuary, and the time that I won a dollar during another sermon!

There are so many others, I could go on and on. But then you would not read the whole post.

Over the years, I have served seven churches as either a volunteer, student minister, or ordained minister. I sometimes wonder if I might be found on someone's list of people that made a difference in their lives.

This week is All Saints Sunday. It is that time that we set aside to remember and celebrate. We thank God for all of the people that have served the church faithfully across the generations. We thank God for those who have been a beacon of hope and a bearer of love in the world. It is also a time when we consider the ways in which we allow our light to shine.
