Scott's Weekly Greeting, June 2, 2021 ...
In recent months, I have started watching a new television series ... Maine Cabin Masters. I am not sure what network it is on, or what day or time. I usually stumble across it when I am channel surfing up and down the dial. (I am not sure that it is called "up and down the dial" anymore, but the image still fits.) If you are unfamiliar, the premise of the program is that the cabin masters repair and restore old, run down cabins across the state of Maine. Hence, the name. Sometimes, upon arrival, they find a cabin that has a definite list or lean to it. Upon further inspection they find that the structure is built on old tree stumps, tumbled piles of rocks, or crumbling cinderblocks. Those discoveries typically take a big bite out of the budget, but the repairs must be done before they can proceed.
In many cases, the foundation issues reveal other problems: doors out of plumb, rotting sill plates, and structural damage that has been caused by years of decline and a cabin sitting on an incline. Once the cabin is sitting on a stabile and strong foundation, then the restoration and repairs can be done.
Each episode ends with the owners touring the cabin and marveling at the transformation. Many times they are brought to tears seeing their beloved cabin restored to given new life.
It all begins with the foundation. Any athlete knows that performance in their sport of choice begins with their feet and their legs. All shots and moves upon the court, field, ice and fairway begin with the feet ... the foundation. It is the same in our lives. Our lives require a strong and stabile foundation. We all likely know people that have weathered significant traumatic events in their lives. We also likely know people that seem to crumble when their circumstances are difficult. One of the wonderful things about living in a community is that we can support one another during the difficult times. We can be a bulwark for a neighbor that is experiencing one of the storms of life. We also know that when we are experiencing difficult days our neighbors will help us through.
