Scott's Weekly Greeting ...

I just enjoyed my THIRD Thanksgiving dinner, and it is not even Thanksgiving day yet! Of course, the second one was leftovers ... so I am not sure if that actually counts on the tally sheet.

Every time that we gather with friends and family is a special occasion, but this Thanksgiving dinner was extra special. This morning the Spurwink preschool that is housed in our church, invited their families to attend a Thanksgiving feast. The Education Director, Sheri, asked me if I would help serve the meal. I was the turkey server. (What else would I be?)

It was a pleasure and a blessing to stand behind that table and serve turkey. More important than the turkey in my serving tongs was the opportunity to interact with the children, parents, teachers and staff. We often do not think about what it is like to communicate with children that are non-verbal. We do not often think about feeding children that have profound food allergies or other dietary issues. We do not often think about the parents and teachers that share their hearts, day in and day out, raising and nurturing these beautiful children.

After I helped to serve the meal, I sat down to eat. All of those teachers and staff that already work so hard prepared the food for the feast. There was turkey, homemade stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, carrots, peas, corn, brussel sprouts, green bean casserole, homemade cranberry sauce with ginger and nutmeg, bread, rolls, and a variety of desserts. What a privilege it was to join them for that meal. It was a feast for the stomach and a loving gesture offered to those families.

With heart and stomach full, we prepare to begin our Advent celebration. This Sunday, we begin with preparation. During his ministry, Jesus called us to be ready (Matthew 24:36-44). As we enter this season, may we be ready. Let us listen for words from the prophets and for angels songs. Let us prepare our hearts and look for Jesus in the midst of our everyday lives. Let us follow the star to the places where the homeless sleep and the hungry wait for food. Let us follow the star to the people who are lost or alone. Let us follow that star to all of those who need to feel the brush of angel wings.

Join us on Sunday morning at 8:00 AM or 10:00 AM as we light the Candle of Hope. All are welcome.
